Are you gripped by social justice issues? Do you pore over newspaper stories that cover poverty, inequality, and human and socio-economic rights?

If so, you might be just the candidate we’re looking for. The Mail & Guardian together with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation are inviting applications for an annual fellowship in social justice reporting.

You’ll be based at the the Johannesburg offices of the M&G, where you’ll spend a year focusing on stories that deal with social justice issues.

The successful candidate will report to the news editor and will be required to provide news and feature content for all platforms of M&G Media Ltd. These pieces will give the reader insight into the structural conditions of inequality that continue to divide the country, going beyond statistics to illuminate the experience of poverty in South Africa.

  • Demonstrate a genuine commitment to social justice
  • Have at least three years experience in journalism
  • Be prepared to work in challenging urban and rural environments
  • Have an understanding of, and respect for, media law and ethics
  • Be willing to work in both print and multimedia formats
